The book of Jonah is one of the most well-known books in the Old Testament, and yet one of the least understood. In Jonah we find an ‘unbelieving believer’, one who knows the right answers but who finds it difficult to trust God. In Jonah we find a disturbing mirror of our souls. Yet in the story of Jonah we also discover the surprising love of God; a love that doesn’t give up, doesn’t give in, and doesn’t walk away, no matter how far away we might try to run. The book of Jonah is about much more than the prodigal prophet and the big fish; it’s really about the surprising love of God.
